Blackdown Hills, Honiton, East Devon | 6 Bedrooms | Sleeps 14

Wolford Lodge was built in 1929 to architectural acclaim and is set in a spectacular valley in the Blackdown Hills (an area of outstanding natural beauty). The house faces due South over mature woodlands inhabited by an abundance of wildlife including Roe deer, woodcock and buzzards. From the top of the valley there are distant sea views towards Budleigh Salterton on the Jurassic Coast. This beautiful and secluded unique house has extensive mature private gardens and woodlands that total 158 acres. A private drive leads to the house which also benefits from a tennis court. Extensively modernised in 2014, this charming family home is full of character and is built on the site of an original house owned by Lt-Gen John Simcoe, the first Governor of Upper Canada, whose private chapel is still in the grounds. Conveniently located 2 hours from London Paddington station to Tiverton Parkway and Waterloo to Honiton.

The large entrance hall leads to a spacious drawing room, with an open woodburnng fireplace and grand piano. French doors open onto the terrace and the garden. The study and kitchen/ breakfast room lead off from the hall. The kitchen is fully equipped with high quality gas and electric appliances, under floor heating and an open fireplace. Also on the ground floor is a utility room, larder and downstairs loo. Upstairs there are 6 double bedrooms one of which has two bunk beds, two fabulously appointed bathrooms with hand-made mosaic Moroccan tiles and Lefroy Brooks fittings with window fabrics supplied by Carolina Irving. One of the bathrooms has an integral large walk-in power shower with an amazing spray shower head. An original 1920s, recently re-enamelled roll top bath is still in situ.

Amazing place and the grounds are just incredible. Our toddler had the best time exploring the grounds and came across a zip line, trampoline and old tree house…… he didn’t want to come home.

The hosts were amazing and I can’t thank them enough for the great hospitality

This is a great house for a large multi generational family. There were 12 of us aged from 4 to 79 and we absolutely loved the house and gardens. Rupert communicated well and we had lots of interesting trips – going to Lyme Regis, Exeter and even the county show. Our thanks to Rupert for allowing us to use this splendid house.

We had an absolutely fantastic time and Penny was superb. Very kind, flexible and available. The house was a dream as were the grounds as an added bonus. Well worth a walk! Very much appreciated the added touches of luxury such as hand soaps, candles and items! The small things go a long way.
